Palm Trimming
We cut the dead fronds and seed pods off sabal, queen, date and other palms around Tampa. The green fronds stay on, the way UF/IFAS says a palm should be trimmed.

Palm tree removal is the fix when a palm is dead or a storm has left it snapped or leaning. A Sharper Image Tree Services takes palms down whole or in sections, from Tampa north to Crystal River. Over a roof or a pool, our crane can lift them clear. Then we cut up the trunk, haul the fronds and wood away and rake the yard.
Some palms come out when they crowd a roof, a pool cage, a driveway or a foundation. A healthy palm with dead fronds and seed pods may only need palm tree trimming. We are based in Tampa with a second shop in Homosassa. Call or text (813) 293-2948 for a free estimate, and send a photo of the palm if you can.
Tell us about the tree, the lot or the structure and where it is. We look at the job and put the estimate in writing.
Our palm tree removal service starts with the space around the palm. On open ground with room to fall, a palm can come down whole. Near a house or a pool, it comes down in sections from the top. Each piece is tied off and lowered on ropes.
A climber with ropes and rigging, or our tracked lift, takes the crown off first. When a tall palm leans over the roof with no room below, our crane does the lifting. It holds each trunk section as the cut is made, then lifts it clear of the house.
Clusters and multi-trunk palms come down one trunk at a time. In a fenced back yard, our compact machines fit through the gate to carry the wood out. Oaks and pines in the yard can come down on the same visit through our tree removal service.
Lethal bronzing is a palm disease first identified in late 2006 in Hillsborough County, in the Tampa area. Date and queen palms were the first found with it, and sabal palms followed in 2008. An insect spreads it, and a UF/IFAS Extension publication says pruning tools cannot pass it on. Once a palm shows symptoms and tests positive, the same publication says to remove it immediately.
Ganoderma butt rot is a fungus disease, and UF/IFAS says all palms are considered hosts. It can show up as a hard, shelf-like conk on the trunk. Right now there are no cultural or chemical controls for it. The advice is to remove the palm as soon as possible after the conks appear.
UF/IFAS also says to remove as much of the stump and root system as possible, or grind the stump. The conks belong in trash bound for a landfill or an incinerator, not in recycled mulch. An ISA Certified Arborist or the UF/IFAS Extension office can diagnose either disease. When a sick palm has to come out, we take it down and haul it away.
It depends on the palm and the address. Tampa, Temple Terrace and Plant City run their own tree permits, separate from Hillsborough County. Tampa lists the queen palm among its invasive or unprotected species, which need no permit. Outside city limits, the county lists it as exempt, except in a wetland or water body.
In unincorporated Pasco County, palms are exempt from residential tree removal permits. Unincorporated Hernando County leaves palms out of its tree removal permit. In unincorporated Pinellas County, including Palm Harbor, many properties need a permit for palms over six feet tall. For any other palm or place, ask the city or county, and we can walk you through its permit page.
Florida law adds one more path for home lots, in section 163.045 of the Florida Statutes. The property owner needs a signed onsite assessment from an ISA certified arborist or a Florida licensed landscape architect. If it finds the palm is a danger, the city or county cannot require a permit or a replacement tree. Where a permit is needed, it is sorted out before work starts.
