Tree Removal
We take down dead and leaning trees of any size, with our crane when a tree hangs over the house. The brush gets chipped and the wood hauled off before we rake the yard.

An oak stump in the front yard, a back lot gone to brush, a pine leaning after the storms. Those are everyday tree problems across Citrus County. The county covers 773 square miles on Florida's Nature Coast, and about a quarter of it is water. Its land runs from coastal islands reached by boat to the Withlacoochee State Forest inland.
A Sharper Image Tree Services is based in Tampa with a second shop in Homosassa. We work Citrus County from the Homosassa shop. Across the county we handle tree removal, tree trimming, palm trimming and storm cleanup. We also grind and pull stumps, clear brush and clear land. Call or text (352) 322-9876 for a free estimate.
Tell us about the tree, the lot or the structure and where it is. We look at the job and put the estimate in writing.
Citrus County's own list of native trees shows how the ground changes from the coast inland. Cabbage palms grow mainly near the coast, while slash pines on moist sand can reach 130 feet. When a tree that size has to come down over a house, our crane lifts the sections clear. In a tight yard, our tracked lift and compact machines fit through the back-yard gate.
Under the county code, topping a tree or cutting off more than 30 percent of its crown counts as tree removal. Tree trimming here means cutting out deadwood and lifting low limbs off the roof and the drive. Palm trimming takes off the dead fronds and the seed pods. UF/IFAS says a palm should keep a round crown, not a feather-duster crown.
In 2024 the National Hurricane Center counted at least 300 Citrus County homes with surge water inside after Helene. Its gusts peaked at 54 mph near Lecanto, while peak water along the coast mostly ran 5 to 8 feet. After a storm, emergency tree service starts with the tree on the roof or across the drive. We make the property safe, then finish the removal and haul off the storm debris from the job.
A stump can sit in a yard for years after the tree is gone, and a cleared lot can leave dozens. Stump grinding takes each one and its surface roots below grade. We rake the chips back into the hole or haul them off. The county landfill turns away stumps over 4 feet across as yard waste, so we grind big ones in place.
We also grind stumps someone else left behind, such as one old palm stump or a row along a fence. For a palm lost to Ganoderma butt rot, UF/IFAS advises pulling out as much stump and root as possible, or grinding it. It says to wait multiple years, not months, before another palm goes in that spot.
Grinding breaks ground, so a Sunshine 811 locate ticket goes in before we start. Member utilities then have 2 full business days to mark their lines. They do not mark private lines on your property, so tell us where any sprinkler lines or buried wires run.
Brush removal clears palmetto, vines and saplings from under the trees you want to keep. On open ground, the brush cutter on our compact track loader grinds it down. Forestry mulching leaves that growth in place as mulch. For a whole lot or acreage, land clearing takes the trees down. Then we pull or grind the stumps and chip or haul the debris.
On vacant land, Citrus County's rules come first. The county's tree page, called Call Before You Cut, says it does not offer permits for land clearing. Clearing trees without contacting the county's Building Division is a code violation, so the tree clearing waits for the permit to build. Then site preparation grubs out the roots and rough-levels the ground, and the trees the site plan saves stay standing.
Two animals can change a clearing job here. In sandhill areas, the county code protects red-cockaded woodpecker colonies, and its usual exemptions do not apply on a parcel with one. In upland habitat, the FWC says gopher tortoises must be moved under its permit before land clearing starts. Those permits and plans belong to the landowner, and we can point you to the right office.
Start with the address. Crystal River and Inverness, the county seat, are the county's two cities, and together they cover about 3 percent of its land. Inside the city limits of Crystal River or Inverness, the county points permit applications to that city's building department. Homosassa Springs, the largest community, is unincorporated, like Lecanto, Beverly Hills, Citrus Springs, Floral City and Sugarmill Woods.
In those areas, a lot with a home already on it gets the code's first exemption. Removing trees there takes no county permit. Dead trees can come down without a permit too, and so can trees lost to a terminal insect infestation, with proof. Trees on the county's invasive list are exempt as well, and that list includes chinaberry, silk tree and melaleuca.
Size matters on vacant land and along protected roads. The code counts a woody plant as a protected tree once its trunk is 4 inches across at chest height. Past 24 inches, it becomes a specimen tree with special standards for protection. The county's canopy road list names road sections in Chassahowitzka, Ozello, Floral City and the Rock Crusher area. Removing a regulated tree along one of them takes a permit and a written justification.

A Sharper Image Tree Service did an excellent job for us. They trimmed and pruned a variety of trees including large live oaks, fishtail palms, areca palms, robellini palms, and crepe myrtles all with great success and many of which were not easy to get to on our property. Tyler and his crew arrived on time, were professional, and very careful not to damage the lawn or any of our property with their equipment.
