Tree Work, Land Clearing and Demolition in Homosassa

Maybe a pine has leaned since the storms, or a dead limb hangs over the roof. In 2024, Helene's surge put up to 5 feet of water inside homes in Homosassa Springs and Crystal River. Less than two weeks later, Milton dropped 7.51 inches of rain near Homosassa. Soaked ground and salt water are hard on trees, and some show the damage months later.

A Sharper Image Tree Services is a tree service company with two shops, South Tampa and Homosassa. We are based in Homosassa for Citrus and Hernando County work. Around town we handle tree removal, trimming, sabal palms, stump grinding, storm cleanup and land clearing. Call or text (352) 322-9876 for a free estimate.

Two Kinds of Ground Under Homosassa Trees

Old Homosassa, the river village along Yulee Drive, sits on low, wet ground over limestone. In Brynwood soil, the most common type mapped there, the rock sits 7 to 20 inches down. Its native trees are slash pine and scattered cypress over saw palmetto. Where limestone sits that close, a stump grinder can only go down to the rock.

Homosassa Springs, a few miles inland along US 19, is mostly dry sand ridge. Candler sand there drains fast and grows turkey oak, sand live oak, longleaf pine and sand pine. UF/IFAS ranks sand pine among the trees with the lowest wind resistance. After Hurricane Ivan, its researchers found 56 percent of standing sand pines had died within three months.

In Homosassa and Homosassa Springs, most homes went up between 1970 and 1999, with a median year built of 1988. More than half the homes in Homosassa Springs are mobile homes, by Census estimates. Over a light roof, we take a tree down in sections and lower each piece on ropes.

Storm Cleanup in Homosassa After Helene and Milton

Homosassa sits on the Nature Coast, the stretch of Gulf shore that runs through Citrus and Hernando counties. In 2023, Idalia's surge flooded more than 6,450 buildings in Citrus County. For Helene in 2024, the county made Zone A evacuation mandatory for about 19,000 people.

The sabal palm is the cabbage palm, Florida's state tree. UF/IFAS says it handles salt spray on its fronds fairly well, but not salt in its root zone. A palm with an undamaged bud can lose every frond and still survive. After a storm, palm trimming clears the dead fronds and shows what is left.

When a tree lands on a house, our emergency tree service makes the property safe first. Our crane lifts sections off the roof, and our tracked lift reaches limbs hung up in the canopy. Then we finish the removal, cut up the wood and haul the debris off. Call or text (352) 322-9876 and we tell you when a crew can be there.

Do You Need a Tree Permit in Homosassa?

Homosassa, Homosassa Springs and Sugarmill Woods are unincorporated, so Citrus County's Land Development Code applies. It protects trees 4 inches or more in DBH, the trunk diameter measured 4.5 feet above the ground. Trees over 24 inches DBH are specimen trees with extra protection.

On a lot with a home on it, the code as written lets you remove trees without a permit. Dead, fallen and invasive trees are exempt too, along with trees diseased beyond saving, with proof supplied to the county. Brazilian pepper, camphor, Chinese tallow and Australian pine are on the county's invasive list. Vacant land is different, since the county ties removing protected trees to a permit to build.

Parts of Yulee Drive, Fishbowl Drive and Hall's River Road are county canopy roads with their own permit rule. The code also counts pruning more than 30 percent of a tree's crown as tree removal. Good tree trimming stays under that line. The county's Building Division in Lecanto answers permit questions, and we can walk you through the county's permit page.

Land Clearing for New Homes Around Homosassa

Census building permit data show Citrus County topped 2,000 new single-family homes a year from 2023 to 2025. FDOT calls the region along the Suncoast Parkway one of Florida's fastest-growing. The parkway now runs through the county to County Road 486. In Sugarmill Woods, 43.5 percent of homes were built in 2000 or later.

Our land clearing takes a wooded lot down to cleared ground once the permits for your build are in place. We take out the trees and stumps, then chip or haul the brush and debris. Our compact track loader with a brush cutter handles thick underbrush. If your builder has a site plan, we work from it on which trees stay.

The dry sand around Homosassa Springs is upland ground, and the FWC says gopher tortoises live in upland habitat. FWC rules say tortoises must be relocated under an FWC permit before land clearing or development. Work that stays at least 25 feet from every burrow may not need that permit. The permit is the property owner's, and we can point you to the FWC's page on it.

Scott and Susan Kramera year ago · Google review

A Sharper Image Tree Service did an excellent job for us. They trimmed and pruned a variety of trees including large live oaks, fishtail palms, areca palms, robellini palms, and crepe myrtles all with great success and many of which were not easy to get to on our property. Tyler and his crew arrived on time, were professional, and very careful not to damage the lawn or any of our property with their equipment.

Homosassa FAQ

Questions We Hear Around Homosassa

A few of the questions we hear most around Homosassa. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (352) 322-9876

What does tree removal cost in Homosassa?
The tree's size and species matter, and so does how close it stands to the house. Access counts too: soft ground near the river or a crane lift over the roof changes the work. So does the wood, since the Citrus County landfill takes no logs over 4 feet across or 10 feet long. Call or text (352) 322-9876 for a free estimate in writing.
My house is on Yulee Drive or Hall's River Road. Does that change anything?
It can, since stretches of both roads are on Citrus County's canopy road list. There, removing a regulated tree within 50 feet of the pavement's centerline takes a tree removal permit. The county also asks for replacement trees of the same species, inch for inch. Check with the county before work starts, and we can help you read the rule.
The pines in my yard looked fine after Helene. Are they still sound?
They may be, but UF/IFAS found that pines can look green after a hurricane and decline over time. Watch for a thinning crown, cracks in the trunk, mushrooms at the base or a lean that shows up fast. If you see any of that, call or text and we will look at the trees with you.
Do you work in Old Homosassa, Homosassa Springs and Sugarmill Woods?
Yes. Our Homosassa shop is our base for Citrus and Hernando County work, so all three are close to home. We also work up US 19 to Crystal River and east to Inverness. We take on tree removal, trimming, palm work, stump grinding and land clearing in each.
Can you help after a storm drops a tree on my house?
Yes. We make the property safe first, then finish the removal and haul the debris off. We document the damage before we cut, and we have worked with homeowners insurance companies on storm jobs. If a power line is down or tangled in the tree, the power company clears it first.
