Dead fronds off, the green crown left full

Palm tree trimming in Tampa is about what comes off and what stays on. We cut off the dead brown fronds and the seed pods that hang under the crown. The green fronds stay, because they make food for the palm. That is the UF/IFAS rule for pruning palms, and it is the rule we trim to.

Our palm tree trimming service covers the sabal palm, also called the cabbage palm, Florida's state tree. We also trim queen, Washington, pindo, date, fishtail, areca and robellini palms. Live oaks and crape myrtles in the same yard can get shade tree trimming on the same visit. Call or text (813) 293-2948 for a free estimate.

What does palm tree trimming take off, and what stays?

Fully brown fronds come off first. So do the seed pods and flower stalks under the crown. Cutting the flower stalks early also heads off messy fruit and the seedlings that sprout from it. UF/IFAS says taking off fully dead fronds and flower and fruit stalks is never a problem for the palm.

The green fronds stay on. UF/IFAS draws the line at the horizontal. Picture the crown as a clock face: every frond above 9 and 3 o'clock stays. That is the outer limit, and a full, round crown is better still.

A palm dropping fronds on the pool cage or the roof takes more care. We can reach tall ones from our tracked lift, and heavy fronds come down on a rope. Before we leave, we haul the fronds off and clean up the yard and the pool.

Palm tree care before hurricane season in Tampa

Hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30. In UF/IFAS hurricane studies, the sabal palm was one of the best survivors. Spring, before the season starts, is a practical time to cut the dead fronds. A UF/IFAS pruning guide notes that cutting them first may keep loose fronds from turning into flying debris.

A hurricane cut is a different thing. It strips a palm down to a small tuft of young fronds, to cut the wind load. UF/IFAS reports what happened to Florida palms in the 2004 and 2005 hurricane seasons. The hurricane-cut ones were more likely to have their crowns snapped off than fuller palms.

Done again and again, heavy cuts can also leave a palm with a thinner, tapered trunk. So we leave the green crown full and cut only the dead fronds and the pods. If a storm puts a palm on the roof, call or text us for emergency tree service.

Lethal bronzing and Ganoderma in Tampa Bay palms

Lethal bronzing is a bacterial palm disease first identified in Florida in late 2006, in Hillsborough County near Tampa. It has since turned up in 21 kinds of palm, including sabal, queen, pindo and date palms. Sap-feeding insects spread it, and UF/IFAS says it does not travel on pruning tools. Early fruit drop or dead flower stalks come first, then the oldest fronds change color.

Once symptoms show, UF/IFAS says the palm is lost and should come out right away. Ganoderma butt rot is a fungus that can decay the lower trunk of any palm. Its sure sign is a hard, shelf-like conk low on the trunk. There is no cure, and infected palms tend to blow down first in heavy wind.

An ISA Certified Arborist or the UF/IFAS Extension office can diagnose either disease. When a sick palm has to come out, we handle the palm removal and haul it away. For Ganoderma, UF/IFAS advises grinding the palm stump or removing as much of the root system as possible. It also warns that planting another palm in the same spot is risky, because the fungus survives in the soil.

FAQ

Palm Trimming Questions, Answered

Common questions about palm trimming around Tampa and north to Crystal River. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (813) 293-2948

How often should palm trees be trimmed?
It depends on the palm and the look you want. UF/IFAS says no time of year is better than another for the palm itself. Palms are often trimmed once or twice a year, or whenever you want a cleaner look.
Should the boots come off my sabal palm?
Boots are the split leaf bases left on a sabal palm's trunk after the fronds are cut. Some sabal palms shed them in 5 to 10 years, and UF/IFAS notes others keep them 50 years or more. We clean off the loose boots where you want a smoother trunk. Boots still held tight protect the trunk, and prying them off can open wounds that let in rot.
Why are the lower fronds on my palm turning yellow or orange?
Yellow or orange lower fronds are often a sign the palm is short on potassium or another nutrient. The palm pulls potassium from those fronds, so UF/IFAS says to leave them on until they are fully brown. Cutting them off again and again leaves the palm with fewer green fronds. The UF/IFAS Extension office can help sort out the cause.
Do you trim palms for HOAs and apartment communities?
Yes. We set up palm trimming programs for HOAs, property managers, apartment and condo communities and businesses. That work is part of our commercial tree service, with written estimates for boards and managers.
How much does palm tree trimming cost?
The price depends on how many palms there are and how tall they are. Access matters too, since a palm over a pool cage or a roof takes more rigging. Seed pods and boots add time on some palms. Call or text (813) 293-2948 for a free estimate in writing.
Do you trim palms outside Tampa?
Yes. We work the corridor from Tampa north to Crystal River, across Hillsborough, Pasco, Hernando and Citrus counties. We have two shops, one in South Tampa and one in Homosassa.
