Tree Work, Land Clearing and Demolition in Inverness

Inverness, the Citrus County seat, sits on dry sand ridges along the Tsala Apopka chain of lakes. Live oaks here spread over lake house roofs and pool cages. Pines can look fine after a hurricane and then decline, UF/IFAS research shows. Big trees near a house call for tree service in Inverness that brings a crane and a tracked lift.

A Sharper Image Tree Services is based in Tampa with a second shop in Homosassa. We come over from our Homosassa shop, about 20 miles east on Homosassa Trail and State Road 44. In Inverness we handle tree removal, tree trimming, palm trimming, stump grinding, storm cleanup and land clearing. Call or text (352) 322-9876 for a free estimate.

Oaks and pines on the Inverness sand ridge

More than half the land in the city is Candler or Lake sand, deep soil that drains fast. Federal soil surveys list turkey oak, bluejack oak, sand live oak and longleaf pine as native trees on it. Sand pine grows on the Candler sand too. The city's 290-acre Whispering Pines Park sits among pines and hardwoods.

Trees around town differ a lot in the wind. UF/IFAS hurricane studies rank live oak, sand live oak, turkey oak and southern magnolia among the most wind-resistant trees. Laurel oak and sand pine rank near the bottom. In one UF/IFAS study after Hurricane Ivan, 56 percent of the standing sand pines died within three months.

Most homes in the city were built between 1970 and 1999, and the median year is 1987, per the Census. A laurel oak planted with a 1987 house is close to 40 years old now. UF/IFAS notes that laurel oaks start to decay as they near 40. Dead limbs, cracks, cavities and mushrooms at the base are the signs to look for.

Who issues tree permits in Inverness, the city or the county?

It depends on which side of the city line the tree stands. Inside city limits, the City Tree Preservation Ordinance applies, and the city's building official issues the permits. The ordinance reaches vacant land and any property that is going to be developed. It also covers yards on developed property, except single-family homes.

A shade tree on a city street needs a permit from the city council before anyone trims or removes it. A tree in dangerous shape may come down with the building official's verbal OK by phone. During a hurricane or another emergency, the building official may waive the requirements as needed.

Outside the city, in Citrus Hills, Hernando, Floral City and Inverness Highlands, Citrus County's code applies instead. It protects trees with a DBH, the trunk diameter 4.5 feet above the ground, of 4 inches or more. A residential lot with a home on it is exempt from the county's tree permit. Codes change, so confirm with the city or the county before cutting starts.

Storm damage in Inverness after Milton and Idalia

Hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30. This far inland, storms hit trees with wind and rain. During Hurricane Milton on October 9, 2024, the National Weather Service measured a 58 mph gust near Inverness. In August 2023, Idalia's gusts reached 60 to 70 mph across Citrus County, with 5.2 inches of rain near Inverness.

When a tree lands on a roof or lanai, we make the property safe first and finish the removal after. Our crane lifts sections over the house, and our tracked lift reaches limbs hung up in the canopy. We document the damage before we cut, and we have worked with homeowners insurance companies on storm jobs. Call or text (352) 322-9876 for emergency tree service, and we tell you when a crew can be there.

UF/IFAS notes that a tree stripped of its leaves in a hurricane is not always dead. The county landfill in Lecanto will not take logs or stumps over 4 feet across or 10 feet long. We cut the wood into sections and haul it away with the chipped brush.

Clearing wooded lots and acreage around Inverness

New homes keep going up around town. The city authorized 42 new single-family homes in 2025, and unincorporated Citrus County authorized 2,029, per Census permit data. Wooded lots on these sands carry the native oaks and pines, with palmetto in the understory.

On a lot or acreage, land clearing means the trees come down and the stumps are ground or pulled. We cut the brush and underbrush, then haul the debris off or chip it. For a new build, site preparation adds rough leveling of the cleared ground so the builder can start. We work from your site plan on which trees stay.

Citrus County issues tree permits only when someone is going to build, and it offers no permit for clearing alone. We clear lots for your build once the permits are in place. Canopy road protection covers part of East Eden Drive near Inverness and East Orange Avenue in Floral City. Under FWC rules, clearing within 25 feet of a gopher tortoise burrow needs an FWC permit first.

Scott and Susan Kramera year ago · Google review

A Sharper Image Tree Service did an excellent job for us. They trimmed and pruned a variety of trees including large live oaks, fishtail palms, areca palms, robellini palms, and crepe myrtles all with great success and many of which were not easy to get to on our property. Tyler and his crew arrived on time, were professional, and very careful not to damage the lawn or any of our property with their equipment.

Inverness FAQ

Questions We Hear Around Inverness

A few of the questions we hear most around Inverness. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (352) 322-9876

Do I need a permit to remove a tree at my Inverness home?
Inside city limits, the tree ordinance leaves out single-family homes but covers vacant lots and land being developed. Street trees need their own city permit. Outside the city, Citrus County exempts lots with a home on them, plus dead, fallen, irreversibly diseased or invasive trees. Keep photos of a dead tree, and confirm with the city or the county before work starts.
What drives the price of tree service in Inverness?
The tree and the yard set the price. An oak over a lake house that needs our crane costs more than a pine felled in an open yard. Hauling the wood and grinding the stump add to the total. Call or text (352) 322-9876 for a free estimate in writing.
Can you trim the oaks and palms around a lake house?
Yes. Our tracked lift and climbing gear reach oak limbs over roofs and pool cages. Oak trimming can also lift a low canopy off the dock. On palms we remove dead fronds and seed pods and keep the fronds above the horizontal, per UF/IFAS.
Do you work in Floral City and Hernando too?
Yes. Hernando sits north of town on US 41, and Floral City sits south on it. Both are unincorporated, like Citrus Hills and Inverness Highlands, so the county's tree rules apply there. Call or text (352) 322-9876 for a free estimate.
