Tree Work, Land Clearing and Demolition in New Port Richey

More than half of New Port Richey's homes were built in the 1970s and 1980s, according to the Census. A shade tree planted beside a 1980 house has had more than 40 years to grow over the roof. UF/IFAS says a laurel oak typically lives about 50 years and starts to decay as it nears 40. Then Helene and Milton came through about two weeks apart in 2024.

A Sharper Image Tree Services is based in Tampa with a second shop in Homosassa. Around New Port Richey we handle tree removal, tree trimming, palm trimming, stump grinding, storm cleanup and land clearing. Our crane and tracked lift reach big trees over houses, and our compact machines fit through a back-yard gate. Call or text (813) 293-2948 for a free estimate.

What do New Port Richey's older yards need from a tree service?

New Port Richey is an older city with about 4.5 square miles of land. The Census puts the median home's build year at 1980. Only about one in ten homes dates from 2000 or later, and about a quarter from before 1970. Detached houses make up about 45 percent of homes, and mobile homes about 15 percent.

The city's main natural soil is Tavares, a deep sand on low hills, per the NRCS soil survey. Its native cover is slash pine and longleaf pine with a few scattered oaks. About a third of the city is mapped as urban land, ground covered by streets and buildings. Along the Pithlachascotee River the soils run wet, and UF/IFAS says leaning trees on saturated soils fail more often.

Laurel oaks and water oaks rank lowest for wind resistance in UF/IFAS hurricane studies. Live oaks and the sabal palm, the cabbage palm that is Florida's state tree, rank among the best survivors. We take failing trees down with our crane or by climbing and rigging, and we trim the oaks worth keeping. Palm trimming takes the dead fronds and seed pods and leaves every frond above the horizontal.

Helene, Milton and storm cleanup on the Pasco coast

On September 26, 2024, Hurricane Helene pushed storm surge onto the Pasco coast. The tide gauge at New Port Richey read 5.04 feet above the average high tide before it stopped reporting. The top gust near the city was 56 mph, per the National Weather Service. The National Hurricane Center counted at least 9,900 damaged structures in the county, most of them from surge flooding.

Milton, on October 9, brought little surge here but heavy rain. A rain gauge 4.7 miles south of the city caught 9 inches. Pasco County says it collected about 1.3 million cubic yards of storm debris after the two storms. That is enough, the county says, to cover its 20-mile stretch of US 19 three feet deep.

If a storm drops a tree on your roof, call or text us. We tell you when a crew can be there. Our emergency tree service makes the site safe first, then finishes the removal and hauls the debris. We document the damage before we cut, and we have worked with homeowners insurance companies on storm jobs.

Downed power lines are the utility's job, so call the utility first. Hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, and storm season fills the schedule fast.

Do you need a tree permit in New Port Richey, Trinity or Hudson?

Inside the city limits, the City of New Port Richey issues tree permits through its Community Development Department. The city works under City Code Section 8.02.00, Tree Protection, and exempts certain species. Its application has check boxes for dead, diseased, hazard, or within 10 feet of a structure. For palms, that distance is 5 feet.

On single-family and duplex lots, the city sets a minimum number of trees by lot size. Healthy trees left on the lot count toward it, and removals may need replacements to reach it. Replacements must be at least 4 inches in DBH, the trunk diameter measured 4.5 feet above the ground. They must also stand at least 8 feet tall.

Outside the city limits, Pasco County issues tree permits under Section 802 of its Land Development Code. That covers Trinity to the southeast, Hudson up US 19, and Holiday, Elfers and Jasmine Estates. The county exempts non-native trees, plus palms and pines other than longleaf pine. Native trees over 5 inches DBH need a permit, and every permit starts with a replant requirement.

Pasco says leaf drop and allergies are not valid reasons for removal. It lists an average review time of 3 to 4 business days. We can walk you through either permit page, and the permit is sorted out before work starts.

Tree service from Holiday and Trinity north to Hudson

We come up from Tampa on the Veterans Expressway and the Suncoast Parkway, then west on State Road 54. From the city, US 19 runs north through Port Richey toward Hudson and south to Holiday. Downtown, Main Street crosses the Pithlachascotee River, which meets the Gulf at Port Richey. Trinity sits to the southeast.

Unincorporated Pasco County permitted 5,737 new single-family homes in 2025, per Census building permit data. Pasco lists native trees in the way of construction among the removals it permits, once a building permit is approved. For a permitted house lot, we clear the trees and grind the stumps so the builder can start.

Our tracked lift reaches big oaks over the house, and our compact track loader with a grapple moves the logs. After a removal, we can grind the stump below grade. Before we grind, a Sunshine 811 ticket gets the buried utility lines marked. We rake the site and haul the debris before we leave.

A Sharper Image Tree Service did an excellent job for us. They trimmed and pruned a variety of trees including large live oaks, fishtail palms, areca palms, robellini palms, and crepe myrtles all with great success and many of which were not easy to get to on our property. Tyler and his crew arrived on time, were professional, and very careful not to damage the lawn or any of our property with their equipment.

New Port Richey FAQ

Questions We Hear Around New Port Richey

A few of the questions we hear most around New Port Richey. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (813) 293-2948

Is my New Port Richey address inside the city limits?
Many New Port Richey mailing addresses sit in unincorporated Pasco County, where the county's tree rules apply. Census ZIP maps put all of 34654 and 34655 outside the city. Even Pasco's own permit office has a New Port Richey 34654 address. The city or the county can confirm which rules cover your lot.
What drives the price of tree work in New Port Richey?
Size and species come first, then how close the tree stands to the roof or the pool cage. Access matters too, and so does grinding the stump. Where a permit applies, the city or county may also require replacement trees. Call or text (813) 293-2948 for a free estimate, and send photos if you like.
Can I skip the permit for a dangerous tree?
State law gives owners of detached single-family homes one path around the local permit. An ISA Certified Arborist or a Florida licensed landscape architect must document the tree as an unacceptable risk. Section 163.045 of the Florida Statutes then bars the city or county from requiring a permit or a replant. We can take the tree down once you have it in hand.
Can you clear a wooded lot near New Port Richey?
We clear lots and acreage once the permits for your build are in place. Pasco County has no lot clearing permit of any kind. On a parcel with no house, removing protected trees takes an assigned address and a site development permit. Any gopher tortoises on the lot must be relocated under an FWC permit before clearing starts.
Can a pine that looks fine after a hurricane still die?
UF/IFAS hurricane research says yes. Pines may look healthy right after a storm, then die slowly over 6 months to 2 years. Some stay green for a year or more, then suddenly turn yellow. If a pine near your house is fading, call or text us and we will look at it with you.
